Swelling in the Lower Left Leg
There are a few reasons why varicose veins are more common in the left leg. For one, gravity plays a role. When one stands or sits for long periods, blood can pool in the legs and cause the veins to swell. As a result, people are more likely to see varicose veins when they get up after sitting for a while.
Another reason varicose veins are more common in the left leg is pregnancy. During pregnancy, the extra weight puts pressure on the pelvis and stomach, which can cause problems with blood flow. This can lead to varicose veins or make existing ones worse.
The last reason has to do with the body’s physiology. The valves in the left leg’s vein are weaker than those in the right leg, making blood flow backward and pool in the vein easier, causing it to swell. Individuals with weak valves in both legs may notice that the varicose veins are about the same on both sides.
