Edema
Edema is a condition where swelling occurs due to the buildup of fluid in the body’s tissues, especially the skin. There are various types and causes of edema, such as pulmonary edema, which impacts the lungs, and pedal edema, which causes the feet to swell. While the condition gradually develops, its onset can also be sudden. In some cases, they can indicate a more serious condition.
While the underlying condition behind the edema often determines its symptoms, pain, tightness, and swelling are common signs of the disorder. Other symptoms may also include shiny and stretched skin, ankle and face puffiness, stiff joints and aching muscles, weight loss or gain, decreased production of urine, neck veins, and other visual anomalies.
Treatment also depends on the trigger of your edema. In many cases, diuretics are prescribed, as they can help you eliminate excess fluid with the increase of the production of urine in the kidneys. However, it’s also possible to prevent or reduce edema through some self-care techniques. These include reducing sodium intake, losing excess weight, exercising, raising legs to improve circulation, wearing compression stockings, dressing warmly when cold, and avoiding extreme temperatures.
