Vaginismus is a condition that can result from certain types of vaginal surgery. The condition can be difficult to live with, and it’s important to be as informed as possible about the risks before undergoing any vaginal surgery. Various types of surgery may result in vaginismus, including but not limited to cosmetic surgery and cancer surgery.
Many women undergo cosmetic surgery procedures such as labiaplasty or vaginoplasty. These cosmetic surgeries are often marketed as vaginal rejuvenation procedures. However, they can do more harm than good. In some cases, these surgeries can result in scarring and nerve damage that leads to vaginismus.
Cancer surgery is another type of surgery that may cause vaginismus because it often involves the removal of the cervix or ovaries, two organs located near the vagina. Removing these organs can sometimes damage surrounding nerves and muscles, leading to vaginismus. Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy can also cause damage, resulting in vaginal disorders. The good news is that with successful treatment; most women report being able to resolve their symptoms and go about their lives without discomfort during penetrative sex.
