Post-Partum Pregnancy
For nine months, a woman’s body goes through some incredible changes to accommodate a growing baby. But once a woman gives birth, and the little one is out in the world, the body isn’t done changing just yet. As a result, pregnancy and childbirth can cause some significant changes to the way the vagina smells.
The most common type of vaginal odor is physiological vaginal discharge, caused by changes in estrogen levels during pregnancy. This type of vaginal odor is usually nothing to worry about and will go away on its own. However, if the odor is accompanied by itching, burning, or redness, it could indicate an infection.
Post-partum vaginosis is like bacterial vaginosis but occurs after childbirth. Childbirth can disrupt the delicate balance of bacteria in the vagina. In most cases, changes in vaginal odor are temporary and will dissipate within a few weeks post-delivery. However, if a woman experiences a sudden or drastic change in vaginal odor that persists for more than a few weeks, it’s important to see a healthcare provider as this could indicate an infection.
