What Causes Vaginal Smell? 14 Possible Causes You Should Know

Vaginal Thrush

Vaginal thrush is a disorder, also known as candidiasis. It is a fungal infection that affects the vulva and vagina. While it’s not technically a sexually transmitted infection, it can be passed between sexual partners. And, since we’re being honest here, it can also cause the vagina to smell less than pleasant.

An overgrowth of the yeast fungus Candida albicans causes vaginal thrush. This overgrowth can be triggered by a few things, including taking antibiotics, having diabetes, or wearing tight-fitting clothes.

In addition to causing a change in odor, vaginal thrush can cause itching, burning, and discomfort during sex. If a woman reports any of these symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor to confirm the presence of thrush and not another infection.

Vaginal thrush is relatively easy to treat. A doctor will likely prescribe an antifungal cream or suppository that a woman will need to use for three to seven days. In some cases, they may also prescribe oral antifungals, which can have more side effects than topical treatments. It is important to finish the entire course of treatment even if the symptoms disappear. Otherwise, the infection could come back even worse.
