Vaginal Discharge with a Fishy Odor
Any odor originating from the vagina is called vaginal odor. The vagina normally has only a moderate odor but sometimes may not have any odor. A fishy odor or other unpleasant vaginal smell could indicate a health problem. Health issues that cause intense vaginal odor may accompany other symptoms, including itchiness, irritation, or abnormal vaginal discharge.
A vaginal infection caused by bacteria is known as bacterial vaginosis (BV). It is the most frequent reason women of reproductive age experience abnormal vaginal discharge. In addition, some women may have vaginal discomfort and a fishy smell due to BV. A bacterial infection, BV develops when the normally balanced lactobacilli multiply excessively. Fishy-smelling vaginal discharge and slight stinging after urinating are two common symptoms of bacterial vaginosis.
Another reason for vaginal discharge with a fishy smell is vaginitis, a condition where the vagina is inflamed or has an infection. Although a bacterial infection is the most frequent cause, it can also result from a yeast infection or trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection. Trichomoniasis is brought on by a parasite that spreads through intercourse and has a foul or fishy smell. In addition, UTI may also cause fishy-smelling vaginal discharge.
