Painful Swallowing
Upper respiratory infections can result from many things, but one of the most common symptoms is painful swallowing. The lining of the throat and tonsils becomes inflamed, causing pain whenever food or drink is taken into the mouth. This inflammation can also make throat-clearing painful, making it difficult to speak clearly and. It also feels like there’s a scratchy sensation in your throat all day. This symptom is more common when you have a cold than when you have strep throat.
Experiencing pain when swallowing is a common symptom of an acute URI. In addition, allergies to pollen and mold spores can cause an increase in mucus production in the nose and throat, which irritates and inflames the mucosa (the protective lining). The swelling and irritation that occurs, as a result, can make it extremely uncomfortable for someone to swallow.
