11 Types Of Toenail Fungus You Should Be Aware Of

Trichophyton Rubrum

Dermatophytes are pathogens that may invade the body by penetrating the hair shaft, whereas others tend to infect the skin of the feet and hands. Trichophyton rubrum, the causative agent of tinea pedis or tinea cruris in colder areas and tinea corporis in warmer regions, is the most widespread of the dermatophytes worldwide. Although T. rubrum infections were uncommon in the 1960s, they have swiftly expanded over the Western Hemisphere. One of the most common places for this dermatophyte to produce infection is in the foot, which may create a non-inflammatory chronic illness.

Common dermatophytes such as T. rubrum cause onychomycosis and tinea pedis. In some countries, T. rubrum is the culprit behind most proximal subungual onychomycosis cases. When you have distal subungual onycholysis, T. rubrum invades the nail bed from the top down. Meanwhile, the nail plate grows from the bottom up or distal growth. The nail may get discolored and thickened at first, but eventually, the whole nail plate may be destroyed, and the nail may become loose from the nail bed. The toenails can have white, disintegrating lesions on the surface.

If no symptoms are present, onychomycosis caused by T. rubrum does not need treatment. However, acceptable aesthetic outcomes and pain relief may be achieved by filing and sculpting.
