Muscle Twitches and Spasms
Whether you drink it first thing in the morning to wake up or enjoy a cup (or two) over lunch to help you power through the afternoon, there’s no denying that caffeine is one of the most widely consumed substances on the planet.
But while we all know that caffeine can give us a much-needed energy boost when flagging, not everyone knows the potential downside of this popular drug. In large doses, caffeine can cause muscle twitches and spasms.
Changes in the level of neurotransmitters in the brain cause muscle twitches. When levels of neurotransmitters are altered, it can cause changes in muscle function. However, caffeine intake can also lead to muscle twitches and spasms when taken in large doses.
While muscle twitches and spasms are usually nothing to worry about, they can be uncomfortable and disruptive. For individuals who find their muscle twitches and spasms frequently, or if they’re severe enough to interfere with daily activities, it’s important to cut back on caffeine intake. Reducing caffeine intake will gradually help minimize withdrawal symptoms such as headaches and irritability. However, cutting out caffeine altogether may be necessary for some people.
