Panic Attack
A panic attack is a feeling of sudden and intense anxiety or fears that can last several minutes. Panic attacks are unpredictable and often unprovoked. Symptoms include racing heartbeat, chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating, trembling, and dizziness. Panic attacks can be extremely debilitating and may even lead to a heart attack.
Researchers believe excessive caffeine intake may cause panic attacks by triggering the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline. Caffeine also causes the body to go into “fight-or-flight” mode, which increases the heart rate and blood pressure while breathing quickens. This can lead to feelings of anxiety and panic. In addition, people susceptible to anxiety or who have anxiety disorders may be more likely to experience panic attacks after consuming caffeine.
The maximum recommended daily intake of caffeine is 400 mg for healthy adults. However, some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others and may experience side effects at lower levels. It is best to limit intake to 200 mg daily or less for individuals prone to anxiety or panic attacks.
