Parasitic Infections
Parasitic infections are rare but can be severe. The most common parasitic infection that causes tonsillitis is named sparganosis. When caused by a parasitic infection, tonsillitis is most often seen in developing countries where hygiene practices are not as rigorous. However, travelers to these countries may also be at risk for developing tonsillitis caused by a parasitic infection.
The most common parasites that can cause tonsil infections are tapeworms and roundworms. These parasites enter the body through contaminated food or water and settle in the intestines. From there, they can migrate to other organs, including the tonsils.
Symptoms of tonsil infections caused by parasites are similar to those seen with other infections, including fever and swollen lymph nodes. Treatment for these infections typically involves antibiotics, although surgery may be necessary to remove the parasite in some cases. The treatment for tonsillitis caused by parasites is similar to other types of tonsillitis. Antibiotics are typically prescribed to clear the infection. Prevention is also important. People with parasitic infections should avoid sharing cups or utensils with others and develop good hygiene habits.
