Tonsils are two small glands at the back of the throat that house white blood cells to fight infections and other diseases caused by foreign invaders. When the tonsils experience trouble, such as having tonsil stones, it may require a person to undergo a tonsillectomy. Tonsillectomy is a medical procedure that describes the surgical removal of the tonsils.
Tonsil stones are among the causes of the removal of tonsils. This occurs when the stones are severe and cause a lot of damage to the tonsils. Typically, doctors recommend using a scalpel, coblation device, or laser to remove them. This method serves as the last resort for critical stages of tonsil stones.
When the tonsil stones are persistent and returning, it may indicate that the treatment or medicines used to cure them are ineffective, leading to the removal of the tonsils through a tonsillectomy.
