Decreased Immune Function and Circulation
Diabetes and peripheral arterial disease are conditions wherein the immune system and the circulation in the body malfunction or have decreased performance. When a person is affected by diabetes, circulatory problems, and a weak immune system, it significantly increases the susceptibility of the person to toenail fungus.
A weak immune system makes a person prone to bacterial, parasitic, viral, and fungal infections due to the decreased white blood cells that fight back these harmful invaders in the body. This makes the body unable to contain the infection brought by the fungi.
Diabetes is a disease that causes decreased blood flow to the feet up to the toes as it progresses, creating an optimal environment for the fungus to thrive. Unfortunately, this will increase the risk of having toenail fungus as the body cannot detect and eliminate the infection as soon as possible.
The elderly are more prone to diseases related to immune and circulatory system functions. As the body thrives on keeping up with harmful invaders, the body’s immune system cannot cope with the critical functions of the body.
