Damaged Nerves
Nerves are the cables of the body that carry electrical impulses or messages between the brain and the rest of the body. These impulses direct the body to feel sensations and help in handling movements. A specific type of nerve supplies movements and sensations in the lower leg, foot, and toe area. This branch is called peroneal nerves. This branch of the sciatic nerve controls the muscle movements such as lifting the ankle, curling the toes in different directions, and twisting the heel.
Injuries in the peroneal nerve can cause numbness, pain, tingling, and weakness in the foot. It affects all the parts of the foot, especially the toes. The toes are greatly affected by the number of peroneal nerves found in them.
Peroneal nerve injuries are caused by knee dislocation, leg fracture, hip replacement surgery, and peroneal nerve compression. When these occur, the toe may experience cramps as a sign and symptom of nerve damage. In addition, the toes may not be able to lift and curl as one of its symptoms too.
