Overuse of the Thumb
There are times when the joints are overextended or overused. The thumb is not an exemption from other parts of the body. It has joints that connect the bones to move smoothly or perform their function. When the thumb is overused, the joints found in it can cause pain, numbness, and stiffness. This condition may also be called texting thumb, as texting may often cause capsulitis in the thumb.
The sheath around the tendons is inflamed, causing it difficult to move. The tunnel around the tendon is narrowed, prompting it to rub when moving. This is where the pain in the thumb occurs. The friction caused by the fatigued tendons makes the thumb feel pain.
There are different activities that can cause overuse syndrome in thumbs. These include working on an assembly line, sewing, playing a musical instrument, and working on the computer. These activities require the thumb to repeat one movement or motion over a long period.
