Injury
Injury, by its general definition, is damage to the body. This is described as any physiological damage in a living tissue caused by immediate physical stress that may occur intentionally or unintentionally. Its severity also varies depending on the impact or trauma after the said injury.
Since the thumb is the most common muscle utilized in the hand, it is prone to injuries. Thumb ligament injuries are very common. They occur in the ligament, where the joint is found at the base of the thumb, called the MP joint.
An injury is serious when the pain is intensely felt, accompanied by tenderness around the base of the thumb. It also has a loose thumb joint. The person may also have difficulty grasping things using the index finger and thumb, an appearance of a bump may also occur, and the base part of the thumb may swell.
This injury will cause pain and discomfort in the thumb. It can affect normal activities which involve the thumb. The pain may also cause uneasiness and an inability to move smoothly. If left untreated, it may cause a broken finger, and surgery may execute.
