Weight loss is also one of the signs of syphilis. It can occur months or even years after the initial infection but typically begins between 6 months and 8 years after contracting the disease. Weight loss may occur due to low appetite and muscle mass waste caused by muscle tissue lesions. Lesions can also cause scarring that leads to the narrowing of blood vessels leading to muscles. This narrowing prevents adequate blood flow to muscles causing them to waste away while other parts of the body get the nutrients they need from your blood circulation.
When someone has syphilis, the disease attacks the body’s immune system and destroys tissues throughout the body. When it comes to weight loss and other physical symptoms, it’s easy to see how this can happen. The body is focused on fighting off the disease instead of all its natural processes, including digestion and energy regulation.
