Loss of Hearing
Hearing loss is a symptom that can be associated with syphilis, but only in certain cases. Syphilis can cause general symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, fever, and sore throat. These are common symptoms of many other diseases and conditions; it’s important to remember that hearing loss is entirely possible without any signs of this sexually transmitted disease.
The most common manifestation of syphilis, however, is called secondary syphilis. This form of the disease occurs due to untreated primary syphilis when someone contracts the disease and does not receive treatment. During this stage, the infection can spread through the body quickly and easily. Hearing loss is one of the first warning signs of syphilis at this stage because the infection has now reached the ear canal and auditory nerve.
Primary syphilis usually has little or no visible symptoms during its initial stages; therefore, it makes sense that many people do not realize they have contracted it until they have developed secondary syphilis. Unfortunately, at this point, the disease can no longer be cured by antibiotics. However, if caught early enough during primary syphilis (before second-stage symptoms develop), it can be treated with antibiotics to prevent further complications.
