Abdominal Cramps
A urinary tract infection is a common infection that can cause severe discomfort. Many people are familiar with the burning sensation and frequent urination that come with a UTI. However, many don’t realize that a UTI can cause abdominal cramps.
While many different bacteria can cause a UTI, one of the most common is E. coli. This bacterium is found in the gastrointestinal tract. E. coli can travel up to the urinary tract in high concentrations and cause an infection. When this happens, individuals may experience a lot of pressure, pain in the lower abdomen, and bloating.
Once E. coli invades the lining of the urinary tract, it can lead to inflammation and irritation. The inflammation caused by a UTI can trigger muscle spasms in the pelvic floor, leading to pain in the lower abdomen or lower back.
People can do a few things to find relief from abdominal cramps. Drinking plenty of fluids is important to flush the bacteria out of the system and reduce inflammation. Sufferers should also avoid caffeine and alcohol, as these irritate the urinary tract and worsen symptoms.
