Upper Back Pain
The most common symptom of a UTI caused by E. coli is a burning sensation when urinating. However, some people also experience upper back pain because of the infection.
There are a few different reasons why a UTI can cause upper back pain. First, the infection can cause kidney tissue inflammation, leading to pain in the upper back or sides. In addition, the nerves in the lower part of the spinal cord that innervate the bladder also innervate parts of the upper back. An infection or inflammation in the bladder can cause referred pain in the upper back.
Some people also have an anatomical defect called vesicoureteral reflux, allowing the urine to flow backward from the bladder into the ureters and kidneys. This backward flow may cause infection and pain in the upper back or sides.
Most upper UTIs, including those caused by E. coli, can be treated with antibiotics. Sometimes, hospitalization may be necessary so individuals can receive IV antibiotics. It is important to finish the entire course of antibiotics, even if the symptoms improve. This will help ensure that the infection is completely eradicated.
