The 10 Causes of Swollen Eyelid (You Should Definitely Be Aware Of)

Liver Failure

Swelling in the eye and eyelids can also result from liver failure. When the liver function fails, complications like arterial vasodilation can lead to circulatory problems. This causes abnormal extracellular fluid regulation and retention, which usually leads to swelling or edema in different body parts, including the legs, the eyes, the stomach, and the brain.

Liver failure happens in at least five stages: inflammation, scarring, cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease (ESLD), and liver cancer. The complication stems from the scarring of the tissues, disrupting the liver functions and distorting the blood flow, causing the liver to become necrotic and die. The death of the liver tissues results in cirrhosis which increases the pressure in the veins, resulting in swelling in different body parts, including the eyes.

Liver failure can also cause multiple complications. Depending on how early it was diagnosed, however, liver diseases are not strictly impossible to treat or manage. Unfortunately, early-stage liver problems are pretty tricky to diagnose. Hence, it is usually detected too late when obvious symptoms are already apparent. Diagnosis is made through either laboratory or imaging tests or biopsy.
