Lupus
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disorder that can cause abnormal blood clotting, among other symptoms. One of the rarer complications that can come with the disease is splinter hemorrhage. People living with lupus are often at risk of developing this condition due to their immune systems attacking the walls of tiny blood vessels in their skin, which can cause them to break and bleed.
It’s typically most prominent on their fingertips and toes, although it can spread to other areas of the body, such as the lips or nose. It’s important to note that while this condition is rare, it isn’t unheard of. Some studies suggest that up to 40 percent of lupus patients suffer from it at some point.
