A Powerful Antioxidant
Spirulina is a powerful antioxidant. It ranks among the most concentrated sources of nutrients in the world, and that’s saying something when you consider how many superfoods are available to us today. In addition to having twice the protein and five times the iron of tofu and broccoli, spirulina has twice as much calcium as milk and ten times more beta-carotene than carrots. These are just a few of the various nutrients in spirulina and its related species, including chlorella, blue-green algae, and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA).
Spirulina contains about eight times as many antioxidants as blueberries at a concentration equal to or greater than that found in acai or goji berries. Antioxidants have been shown to thwart the effects of damaging free radicals on healthy cells. This results in an improved immune system, cardiovascular health, and increased longevity. Spirulina also contains lipoic acid, an important cofactor in energy production by enzymes responsible for burning fat cells, meaning it assists your metabolism with weight loss.
