Burning Mouth Syndrome
A sore tongue can be caused by many factors, including burning mouth syndrome. Burning mouth syndrome is a condition that causes a burning sensation in the mouth. Some people experience a tingling sensation, and others feel a painful burning sensation that can be described as searing, scalding, or stabbing. Burning mouth syndrome may also cause a metallic taste and sensitivity to hot or cold food and drinks. This condition typically affects women over 40, although it can affect people of any age.
The exact cause of BMS is unknown. However, it seems triggered by certain medications or nutritional deficiencies coupled with stressors such as smoking, poor dental hygiene, poor nutrition, hormone changes during menopause or pregnancy, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes and thyroid disease.
