The 15 Causes of Sore Tongue You Should Be Aware Of

Mouth Ulcers

A mouth ulcer is an open sore in the mouth. There are several mouth ulcers, but the most common is aphthous stomatitis or “canker sore.” A canker sore appears as a tiny red dot on the tongue, gums, or inside of the cheeks. Eventually, it breaks open and bleeds.

A canker sore may cause a sore tongue when it forms on the top surface of the tongue, as this causes friction against your tongue as you move it around. In addition, as bacteria get trapped under the tongue, a sore tongue also results.

Treatment for mouth ulcers may include topical pain relievers such as lidocaine, rinsing with salt water, or over-the-counter medication. If you have a canker sore and your tongue is sore, try eating soft foods that don’t require much chewing until the sore heals.
