Pemphigus Vulgaris
Pemphigus Vulgaris is a rare autoimmune disease of the skin and mucous membranes, which can result in painful and potentially deadly lesions and a sore tongue. It is usually treated with immunosuppressive drugs, often in combination with corticosteroids. Although this condition rarely produces a sore tongue on its own, it can be a symptom of a more serious condition.
As stated above, Pemphigus Vulgaris is an autoimmune disease of the skin and mucous membranes, meaning that the immune system attacks healthy tissue by mistake. In this case, the anti-tissue antibodies attack the keratinocyte cells in the skin and mucous membranes. Keratinocytes play an important role in protective immunity because they recognize foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses and produce specific antibodies to fight them off.
Pemphigus Vulgaris can be caused by anything that disrupts this natural response mechanism. For example, it has been linked to genetic mutations, certain medications, infections like HIV or malaria, or autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which causes inflammation throughout the body.
