14 Signs To Be Aware Of: Sleep Deprivation Symptoms (List)

Frequent Yawning

Yawning is a reflexive act characterized by a simultaneous deep inhalation of air and a stretching of the eardrums, followed by an exhalation of breath. It is usually preceded by a deep inhalation to fill the lungs with fresh oxygen.

While yawning is still not fully understood, it is generally believed to be a way for the body to cool down the brain. Studies have shown that when we yawn, the brain temperature decreases by as much as 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit. This drop in temperature may help to improve alertness and cognitive function.

While the exact mechanism is still unknown, it is believed that sleep deprivation can cause frequent yawning because it leads to an increase in levels of adenosine in the brain. Adenosine is a nucleoside molecule that plays a role in regulating sleep-wake cycles. When we are awake, levels of adenosine build up in the brain and cause feelings of fatigue. Once we fall asleep, levels of adenosine decrease, and the body feels more rested. In addition to causing frequent yawning, sleep deprivation can lead to other side effects, such as impaired judgment and anxiety.
