What Could Trigger Skin Tags? 15 Possible Causes

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal change is a common cause of skin tags. Hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, menstruation (when a woman’s body produces eggs for fertilization), or when a man or woman reaches the age of 50 are factors that can cause skin tags. Hormones are chemical substances that control various processes in the body. For example, estrogen and progesterone keep the breast tissue soft during a woman’s reproductive period.

These hormones also help regulate other functions of the female reproductive system, including menstrual cycles and pregnancy. However, after menopause (when a woman no longer has menstrual periods), these hormones plummet, which could result in skin tags on the breasts, neck, and other parts of the body.

In men, testosterone is one hormone that regulates the development of male sexual organs such as testicles and prostate glands. Testosterone levels rise when a boy reaches puberty (usually between the ages of 10-14).
