Sleep Deprivation
Insufficient sleep can weaken brain function, leading to short-term memory loss. According to research, people who don’t get enough sleep, particularly the elderly, suffer from brain degradation and serious memory loss.
The research is the first to establish a connection between insufficient sleep and memory loss. According to the study, crucial brain waves are made during sleep, which does an important job of retaining memories.
The prefrontal cortex, a brain’s component wherein long-term memories are kept, receives memories from the hippocampus through the action of brain waves. In adults, lack of sleep ends up causing memories to become trapped in the hippocampus instead of arriving in the prefrontal cortex. As a result, the person will have difficulty retrieving information and will start forgetting things already known, such as names.
Good sleep is important as it recharges and rests the mind and body. It is also associated with the brain’s ability to retrieve and learn new information. Moreover, the brain keeps the information gathered during the day as memory during sleep. So, a person with a lack of sleep has a high chance of being forgetful.
