Vision or Hearing Loss
Previous studies revealed that memory loss and a higher risk of Alzheimer’s are linked to hearing loss and optical abnormalities. On the other hand, recent research says that treating vision and hearing issues can delay cognitive decline.
Individuals who undergo cataract surgery show a deliberate decline rate of cognitive function. The same is true for individuals who corrected their hearing impairment by wearing hearing aids. Both of these research studies used word recall tests to observe the cognitive decline rate of the participants by assessing their episodic memory.
The researchers then differentiated the levels of cognitive function issues before and after the individuals had cataract surgery or began using hearing aids. The researchers worked with 2,068 people participating between waves two and six from 2002 to 2014. The outcomes of these participants were then differentiated from those of 3,636 extra people who did not have cataract surgery.
In this instance, the researchers discovered that individuals who had completed the remedial intervention showed a lower rate of cognitive deterioration by 50 percent than people who had not. Similar findings were made by the study that looked at the relationship between hearing aids and the rates of cognitive deterioration.
