Extreme Pain
Sepsis is extremely painful because it causes inflammation throughout the entire body. This inflammation triggers the release of chemicals into the bloodstream that signals pain receptors. The pain from sepsis can be so severe that it is often described as “burning.” Infections are the leading cause of sepsis, so it’s important to practice good hygiene and see a doctor for individuals who suspect they have caught sepsis.
In addition to the physical pain of sepsis, patients often suffer from emotional distress. The extreme fatigue and weakness that comes with sepsis can make it difficult to care for themselves or their loved ones. The mental and emotional effects of sepsis can last long after the physical symptoms have resolved. Treatment for sepsis typically includes antibiotics and aggressive supportive care.
With early diagnosis and treatment, most people with sepsis recover fully. However, many survivors experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Therefore, it is important to seek treatment for these conditions so that individuals can live a full and healthy life after surviving sepsis.
