Turns Food into Energy
Selenium is an important trace mineral that is found in some foods, as well as supplements. Its role in the body is complex, but one of its most important functions is helping convert food into energy. This process, known as metabolism, involves several different chemical reactions in the body.
Metabolism can be further divided into two categories, namely anabolic and catabolic. Selenium plays a role in both processes. In terms of anabolic metabolism, selenium is needed to produce certain antioxidant enzymes. These enzymes help protect the cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage cells and lead to inflammation. Antioxidant enzymes help neutralize free radicals and prevent cell damage.
In terms of catabolic metabolism, selenium is needed to produce certain enzymes known as thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones play a role in regulating metabolism. For example, they help control the rate at which cells break down carbohydrates and fats for energy. If these hormones are not produced sufficiently, metabolism can become impaired.
