Protects Against Heart Disease
Selenium is an essential nutrient that our bodies need in small amounts to function properly. Interestingly enough, this mineral may also help reduce the risk of heart disease.
While more research is needed to confirm the link between selenium and heart disease, some studies have shown that taking a selenium supplement may help reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. In one study, researchers found that those with lower levels of selenium were more likely to have coronary artery disease than those with higher levels of selenium. Further findings showed that those with higher levels of selenium in their blood were less likely to die from cardiovascular disease than those with lower levels of selenium.
Selenium supplements should only be taken under the supervision of a medical professional. While selenium is safe for most people, taking too much of it can lead to selenosis, a type of poisoning. Although more research is needed to confirm the link between selenium and heart disease, these studies suggest that there may be a connection between the two.
