Combats Depression
It’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed or sad at times. However, depression isn’t. The mental condition is characterized by long-term feelings of sadness or emptiness and the inability to experience the pleasure that occurs for no apparent reason. Based on WHO, it’s also one of the leading causes of disability globally. In mild cases, it may undermine relationships and make working or maintaining good health challenging.
Depression causes a broad range of physical and psychological symptoms, such as low mood, loss of pleasure and interest, appetite and body weight changes, fatigue or decreased energy, trouble sleeping, oversleeping, feelings of worthlessness, and thoughts of suicide or death. However, pinpointing the cause of the mental disorder isn’t easy, as factors can include genetic features and social or psychological factors.
In many cases, depression can be treated. Some have found support from loved ones effective, while others have succeeded with psychotherapy. The consumption of probiotics has also been linked to mood and anxiety, and may improve bouts of depression due to bidirectional communications between the brain and gut. For those who are unable to overcome their depression through these treatment methods, antidepressants may be prescribed by a doctor to help manage the condition.
