Change in Libido
There are different theories about hormonal changes affecting a woman’s libido. Some experts believe that the sharp rise in estrogen just before ovulation could increase sex drive, while others think that the dip in estrogen after ovulation could lead to a loss of interest in sex. Progesterone has also been shown to have an inhibitory effect on sexual desire. It’s thought that combining all these hormonal changes might result in fluctuating libidos for some women during different stages of their menstrual cycle.
In addition, the physical symptoms of PMS can be incredibly draining, leaving them with little to no energy besides taking care of themselves. Secondly, the mood swings associated with PMS can make it difficult to feel sexy or in the mood for sex.
Women can do a few things to mitigate the change in libido. Exercise helps manage both the physical and emotional symptoms of PMS. If the symptoms are particularly severe, women should consider talking to their doctors about taking birth control pills or other medications designed to stabilize hormone levels.
