13 Symptoms And Early Warning Signs Of PMS (Don’t Ignore)

Breast Tenderness

Breast tenderness is one of the most frustrating symptoms of PMS for many women. Breast tenderness is so common that it’s estimated that 75 percent of all women experience it at some point in their lives. So, what exactly is the connection between PMS and breast tenderness?

Both estrogen and progesterone can cause changes in breast tissue that lead to tenderness. Estrogen causes the breast ducts to enlarge, while progesterone production causes the milk glands to swell. Both events can cause the breasts to feel sore. Changes in hormone levels can also cause fluid retention, leading to extra weight gain and bloating, which can contribute to breast tenderness.

Breast swelling and tenderness can occur during the second half of your menstrual cycle, typically starting around day 14 and lasting until the period begins. The good news is that there are a few ways to help ease a woman’s discomfort. For example, wearing a supportive bra, applying a warm compress to the breasts, taking over-the-counter pain relievers, and avoiding caffeine can reduce breast tenderness.
