Achilles Tendon Tightness
The Achilles tendon is the strong cord that connects the muscles in the heel to the back of the calf. It is also known as the calcaneal tendon and is located at the lower part of the leg. The tendon is constantly under heavy pressure due to the amount of weight placed on it but receives a limited supply of blood. As a result, it is a tough band but also highly susceptible to various injuries such as tears, ruptures, or tendinosis.
People who suffer from plantar fasciitis experience tightness in the Achilles tendon area, which causes extreme discomfort and limits their mobility. Achilles tendon tightness, known as tendinosis (from tendonitis), is the inflammation of the tendon. When the tendon becomes inflamed, it becomes tight, which leads to contraction and inflexibility.
When the tendon tightens, it affects the muscles in the immediate area, pulling them closer, which leads to discomfort, pain, and difficulty in movement. Doctors recommend stretching exercises once an individual feels that their Achilles tendon has tightened. They also recommend calf strengthening exercises to prevent further recurrence of tightening. Also, they emphasize using proper footwear with enough cushioning and support.
