Pet Hygiene
Pets can become infected with pinworm if they eat contaminated food or have contact with contaminated surfaces. The eggs can also be passed from an infected animal to a person, which is why it is important to practice good hygiene when handling pets, especially if you know or suspect that they have worms.
The most common sign of pinworms in pets is intense itching in the anal area because the female worm lays its eggs in this region. If you notice a pet excessively licks or bites at its rear end, it’s time to look closer. Other signs of pinworms include diarrhea, weight loss, appetite loss, abdominal pain, dull coat, and vomiting.
For pet owners who notice any of these signs in their pet, it is imperative to schedule an appointment with a veterinarian right away. They will be able to confirm whether a pet has pinworms. In addition, a veterinarian can recommend the best course of treatment for a pet based on the severity of its infestation. In some cases, surgery may even be necessary to remove particularly stubborn worms.
