Close Contact with Infected People
Pinworm infections are usually passed through close contacts, such as sharing a bed or touching something that has come into contact with the infected person. The eggs can also be transferred to food, which can lead to an infection if the food is eaten.
In most cases, the infection is not passed on through sexual contact. However, it is still possible for the eggs to be passed on through this method if there is skin-to-skin contact in the anal or genital area. The incubation period for pinworm infections is between two and eight weeks. Symptoms can take up to two months to develop after a person has been infected.
A pinworm infection is usually diagnosed based on the symptoms that are present. A doctor may also ask about a patient’s toilet habits and whether they have had any recent close contact with someone with a pinworm infection. In some cases, doctors may request a stool sample to examine it for signs of pinworms or their eggs.
