Scratching the Anus
Most people are familiar with the itchy sensation caused by certain types of insects, like mosquitoes. But did you know that there are parasites that can cause severe itching around the anus? This is because they lay their eggs in this area, and the resulting irritation can be very intense. For instance, pinworms are particularly fond of feeding on human feces.
One of the most interesting things about pinworms is their ability to survive in hostile environments. For example, they can live in damp, dark places like sewers and latrines. They can also withstand temperatures as high as 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
It is also important to remember that pinworms lay their eggs at night. People often scratch their itchy anus in their sleep without realizing it. This action then transfers the eggs to under the fingernails. Once the eggs are under the nails, they can be transferred back to contaminated surfaces or directly into someone’s mouth, beginning the cycle again. That’s why it’s important to practice good hygiene, such as washing hands thoroughly after waking up.
