Clotrimazole is an antifungal medication used to treat vagina, skin, mouth, and throat yeast infections. In addition, this medication prevents fungus growth in the vaginal region in women with complicated pinworms. This medication is classified as an azole antifungal. Azole antifungals work by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of the fungal cell membrane. This action disrupts the cell membrane and causes it to become leaky, leading to the death of the fungus.
Clotrimazole cream or lozenge should be applied to the affected area twice daily for two weeks. For vaginal yeast infections resulting from untreated pinworms, the cream should be inserted into the vagina with a disposable applicator as directed on the package insert.
