Pyrantel
Pyrantel pamoate is an anthelmintic, or anti-worm, medication. Specifically, it is effective against nematode worms and Enterobius vermicularis, commonly known as pinworms. Pyrantel is available in oral tablet and suspension form. It is also effective against certain types of tapeworms, although it is not approved for use against human tapeworms by the FDA. It is taken either as a single dose or in divided doses for three days.
Pyrantel works by causing paralysis of the worms. This paralysis leads to the expulsion of the worms from the body in the stool. The exact mechanism of action is not fully understood but is thought to involve interference with neurotransmission at the neuromuscular junction.
Common side effects of pyrantel include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. More severe side effects are rare but can include allergic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Pyrantel is generally considered safe and well-tolerated. However, it is essential to take as directed and to finish the entire course of treatment to ensure that all the worms are killed and to prevent reinfection.
