Quinolones
Peritoneal cavity contamination occurs when pinworms or their eggs travel from the intestine through the anus and into the peritoneum. This abdominal cavity lining contains most of the intra-abdominal organs, including the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, and spleen. This commonly occurs in young children who may not practice good hygiene after using the restroom. Symptoms of abdominal peritonitis include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and bloating. If left untreated, pelvic abdominal peritonitis can lead to sepsis, a severe systemic infection, and death.
There are several ways to treat abdominal peritonitis. In most cases, a course of antibiotics called quinolones may be sufficient to clear the infection. Quinolones are effective against a wide range of bacteria. This means they can be used to treat abdominal peritonitis from pinworm contamination. Additionally, quinolones have a low rate of side effects and are relatively safe for use in both adults and children. The prognosis for patients with abdominal peritonitis is generally good if the infection is caught early and treated promptly to avoid complications and ensure a good outcome.
