What Are The Triggers Of Petechiae? 10 Common Causes

Injury

Accidental and non-accidental injuries resulting in damage to the skin and bruising from blunt force, strangulation, biting, smothering, spanking, or hitting can also cause oculo-cutaneous petechiae to form on the skin. Aside from these, friction and sunburn can also develop tiny, flat petechiae rashes that aren’t itchy or painful.

Unlike bruising and blood leaks from the blood vessels into the tissues of the skin, mucus membranes, or other organs, muscles, and bones caused by chronic physical trauma, petechiae aren’t exactly bruises. Instead, they are tiny flat red or purple blood spots that suddenly appear on the skin as an indicator of another problem—one that is causing the vascular hemorrhage.

Because petechiae rashes are more like a symptom than an actual condition, any sudden and unexplained formation of bruises or blood spots may be caused by any of the other listed causes of petechiae, including but not limited to fungal, bacterial, or viral infections, hematological and malignant disorders, connective tissue disorder, congenital diseases, vitamin deficiency, and drug reaction.
