Honey

Another alternative treatment for perioral dermatitis is natural honey. Honey is a viscous and sweet substance created by bees in their colonies. Bees collect pollen, nectar, and other sugary plant secretions and refine them through regurgitation and enzyme activities. The sugars become highly concentrated during storage in the hive until they become viscous and thick enough.

Honey contains polyphenols which are anti-inflammatory substances. They also contain gluconic acid and which can also inhibit the growth and spread of bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms on the skin. Dermatologists also understand honey’s curative properties and recommend using it as a topical agent. Honey can be mixed with essential oils and applied to the infected area overnight, then rinsed in the morning using warm water. This may be repeated until improvements have been observed. Some prefer applying honey directly on the rashes and papules every few hours. Honey works by sealing the infected area and letting the compounds work against the infection.

However, if the individual has allergies to using honey, they can manifest redness, itchiness, irritation, and swelling.
