Lower Back Pain
During menstruation, the muscles in the uterus contract to detach or remove the thick uterus lining. As mentioned earlier, these contractions are caused by prostaglandins. High levels of prostaglandins can lead to abdominal cramps and lower back pain. Patients may experience varying intensities of lower back pain. Those with underlying health conditions can feel more intense pain.
For instance, patients with endometriosis, PID or pelvic inflammatory disease, and sexually transmitted infections are reported to experience severe back pain before and during their periods. In addition, those who recently have a miscarriage, abnormal pregnancy, or adenomyosis also experience unbearable lower back pain as a PMS symptom.
Patients may try back massages, acupuncture, and hot compress to alleviate the pain. However, those who experience recurring and worsening back pain should immediately consult a doctor and ask for oral medications.
