Period Cravings
Another warning sign that a girl’s period is coming is a sudden increase in appetite. Most women experience wanting to eat chips, chocolates, pasta, pizza, and all kinds of unhealthy food right before their period. These cravings and unexplainable hunger are all reasonable and have legitimate reasons.
Experts explained period cravings happen due to the sudden changes in estrogen and progesterone levels. Low levels of these hormones can signal the brain to crave food with loads of sugar and carbs. This is to prepare the body in combating all the symptoms of PMS. Moreover, the body releases serotonin after eating sweets and starchy food (this is why they are called comfort foods). The extra serotonin can help the patient overcome the sadness and gloominess brought by PMS.
Patients who experience severe compulsive eating, binge eating, and food cravings may also suffer from PMDD or premenstrual dysphoric disorder. In this case, medical attention is needed.
