Frequent Headaches and Migraines
A headache is a pain in the face or head, usually felt like a throbbing pressure or a sharp and pulsating sensation. Headaches can be triggered by poor posture, stress, extremely hot temperature, changes in sleep patterns, and consumption of alcohol and certain foods. But extremely painful and frequent headaches can signify underlying health conditions, like brain tumors, eye cancer, or hormonal imbalances.
This is why patients with PCOS often suffer from intense headaches. A study conducted in 2019 showed that patients with PCOS are more likely to experience frequent and severe headaches. Furthermore, the study highlighted that 86 percent of PCOS patients suffer from migraines. Migraine is a neurological condition described as the combination of severe headache, nausea, loss of balance, and visual disturbance.
Although there are no studies to prove the relationship between migraines and PCOS, both conditions have similar triggers and causes. They are both affected by the fluctuation of estrogen levels. They are both hereditary diseases and often start to flare up during adolescence. Furthermore, both conditions gradually disappear as the patient reaches menopausal age. So, anecdotal reports dictate that migraines can be a symptom of PCOS and vice versa.
