10 Signs And Symptoms Of PCOS To Know

Hair Issues

The hair is known as the crowning glory of every woman. Over the years, hair has become a symbol of beauty and status, so almost all ladies worldwide take extra good care of their hair. However, some hair issues, like sudden hair loss or abnormal hair growth, can’t be solved by hair products and treatments alone. These unexplainable issues are usually symptoms of underlying health conditions like PCOS.

Abnormal hair growth caused by PCOS is medically referred to as hirsutism. Patients with hirsutism experience unexplainable growth of thick, dark hair on their chest, lower back, thighs, tummy, neck, and face. Hirsutism is the result of the overproduction of a hormone called androgens. Androgens are sex hormones (found in male and female bodies) mainly responsible for developing the secondary sex characteristics of male teens. However, due to PCOS, the female body produces more androgens than it actually needs.

This condition is a serious indication of possible fertility issues and hormonal imbalances. Unfortunately, 93 percent of patients with this condition feel ashamed and refuse to seek medical help. In addition, the abnormal growth of hair can negatively affect the patient’s self-esteem and confidence, leading to social anxiety, social withdrawal, depression, and other psychological issues.
