Feeling of Fullness in the Lower Abdomen
The feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen may be caused by cysts pressing on the bladder or rectum. The pressure on these organs can lead to a sense of having to urinate. This symptom is often experienced during an episode of pain or discomfort in the abdomen. It will probably worsen when they lie down or stand upright for long periods.
Being full or bloated in the lower abdomen can be a symptom of an ovarian cyst. However, this is caused by the cyst’s effect on the intestines, not the effect on the reproductive organs. Ovarian cysts develop from cells of the ovaries that have multiplied too quickly. A large ovarian cyst can push against the lower pelvic organs and create this sensation of pressure or fullness in the belly.
A simple, functional cyst is the most common cause of an enlarged or painful ovary. Functional cysts are benign, meaning they aren’t cancerous. They can affect women at any age and often appear during menstruation and resolve after the period ends.
In rare cases, ovarian cysts are caused by cancerous tumors that arise from the ovaries’ epithelial cells (the cells that line the reproductive organs). These tumors are more likely to occur in postmenopausal women than younger ones. They may cause a lump to grow on the ovary and eventually spread to other body parts, such as the liver and lungs.
While this symptom is usually associated with ovarian cysts, other conditions such as endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease can also cause it. You must visit a doctor if you experience this symptom because it may indicate a severe condition, such as a ruptured cyst or bowel obstruction, which requires immediate medical attention.
